Statistical analysis of life history calendar data

The life history calendar is a data-collection tool for obtaining reliable retrospective data about life events. To illustrate the analysis of such data, we compare the model-based probabilistic event history analysis and the model-free data mining method, sequence analysis. In event history analysis, we estimate instead of transition hazards the cumulative prediction probabilities of life events in the entire trajectory. In sequence analysis, we compare several dissimilarity metrics and contrast data-driven and user-defined substitution costs. On the Borana Calendrical System: A Preliminary Field Report

This article addresses the astronomical functioning of the lunar calendar of the Oromo Borana (Ethiopia and Kenya). It is based on the participant observation method, observing the night sky over a time of about one year with Bante Abbagala, a Borana expert in time reckoning. Differently from previous ethnographic accounts and hypotheses, the author suggests that the Borana implicitly add an intercalary month that allows keeping correspondence between season and the name of the lunar month, even if they do not acknowledge it. Błogosławiony Grzegorz Chomyszyn był ukraińskim greckokatolickim biskupem i męczennikiem. Urodził się 25 marca 1867 r. w wiosce Hadyńkowce, we wschodniej Galicji. W 1904 r. został wyświęcony na biskupa Stanisławowa. Chomyszyn uważał, że Cerkiew greckokatolicka powinna przyjąć więcej tradycji zachodnich, aby podkreślić związek unickiej Cerkwi z Rzymem. Oznaczało to wprowadzenie łacińskich praktyk takich jak kalendarz gregoriański i ścisłe przestrzegania celibatu duchownych.

Among the important parts of the traditional calendar rites in Sicily are bakery and pastry products made in special shapes. Being produced and consumed during certain rituals and being shaped to reflect their mystic connotations, these products become the integral signs of these rituals in both the constitutive and functional sense. What is refl ected in their symbolism, beliefs, and related practices is the deeply archaic peasant worldview in the framework of which these rituals had been shaped; and in particular, it is the meaning that is attached to the infl uence of chthonic forces in the cyclic reproduction of natural and social life.
